On 1 January 2026, in Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodian civilians went to check their homes, which had been taken over by Thai soldiers inside Cambodian territory, far beyond the recognized boundary. When Thai military forces arrived, Cambodian women raised their hands in a respectful gesture (sampeah) and asked for permission to collect some essential belongings. The armed Thai soldiers did not allow Cambodian civilians to use vehicles to transport their belongings and ordered the Cambodian men to leave, before allowing the Cambodian women who owned the houses to enter briefly to collect a small number of remaining items. The Cambodian homeowners stated that most valuable property and household belongings had been stolen by Thai soldiers.
